چکیده
Studies on the cognitive effects of APOE allele variation in healthy persons have mainly focused on episodic memory performance as most sensitive to genetic effects. The present study focuses on working memory performance, measured both in an experimental paradigm, the AX-Continuous Performance Task (AX-CPT), and in neuropsychological test paradigms of span capacity and interference control. In a highly functioning healthy group (N = 186) of mean age 64.5 years we found evidence of reduced working memory performance in APOE 4 carriers, with sex and 4 dose as modifying variables. Several aspects of capacity and control in working memory were affected, while genetic effects were not present for measures of episodic memory. The pattern of results suggests that response inhibition is sensitive to genetic effects. In healthy individuals the broad range of neurobiological mechanisms associated with APOE is consistent with effects on non-memory cognitive subsystems, and gender effects may be modulated by interaction of APOE with myelination, androgen mechanisms, or broad patterns of age-related changes in gene expression.

Spatial working memory deficit in unilateral neglect.
Based on the similarity of brain areas lesioned in neglect and those activated by spatial working memory (WM) tasks in normals, we hypothesized that neglect may involve spatial WM impairments. A left neglect patient with right inferior frontal and basal ganglia damage performed cancellation tasks, making either highly visible marks (to provide a reminder of visited items), or invisible marks (s...
متن کاملPrincipal component analysis of behavioural individual differences suggests that particular aspects of visual working memory may relate to specific aspects of attention.
The previously separate literatures on visual attention and on visual working memory are converging, with growing interest in how visual attention may relate to visual short-term memory, as exemplified by this special issue. We report exploratory analysis of how individual behavioural differences in separable aspects of attention may relate to particular aspects of visual working memory. Previo...
متن کاملProspective memory and working memory: asymmetrical effects during frontal lobe TMS stimulation.
The role of working memory (WM) for the realization of an intended action (prospective memory, PM) has been debated in recent neuropsychological literature. The present study aimed to assess whether WM and PM share resources or are, alternatively, two distinct mechanisms. A verbal task was used, which manipulated the cognitive demand of both WM and PM dimensions on an event-based prospective ta...
متن کاملDelays in neural processing during working memory encoding in normal aging.
Declines in neural processing speed have been proposed to underlie a broad range of cognitive deficits in older adults. However, the impact of delays in neural processing during stimulus encoding on working memory (WM) performance is not well understood. In the current study, we assessed the influence of aging on the relationship between neural measures of processing speed and WM performance du...
متن کاملThe effect of non-visual working memory load on top-down modulation of visual processing.
While a core function of the working memory (WM) system is the active maintenance of behaviorally relevant sensory representations, it is also critical that distracting stimuli are appropriately ignored. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine the role of domain-general WM resources in the top-down attentional modulation of task-relevant and irrelevant visual representations. I...
